Overcoming Fears and Anxiety with Hypnosis

Fear is a natural and important part of your biology.

You are born with the innate fight-or-flight response, which is designed to protect you from immediate threats. When this response is triggered, your sympathetic nervous system activates, preparing your bodies to either fight, flee, or freeze.

This mechanism was crucial for our ancestors, helping them survive encounters with wild animals or hostile tribes.

When this response is activated, blood is diverted from your frontal lobe, the area responsible for logical reasoning, to your extremities, giving you the physical advantage to confront danger, or run.

Biologically, the chemical process of an emotion should run its course within 90 seconds.

Once the threat passes, your parasympathetic system is supposed to activate, restoring your body to homeostasis.

In modern society, however, this fight-or-flight response is often triggered by non-life-threatening situations, such as watching the news, managing your busy schedule, dealing with traffic, or facing confrontations at work.

Everyday stressors and your continued focus on them through thinking and worrying, can keep you in a prolonged state of fight/flight, preventing the parasympathetic system from restoring balance.

As a result, many people experience chronic anxiety, burnout, and various health issues. When you're constantly in a state of fear, your frontal lobe is not fully functional, leading to poor decision-making and increased stress.

Diet can also contribute to anxiety, because when blood sugar is too low or too high it can mimic anxiety symptoms and result in an association of fear with a certain situation, like flying or driving.

How Hypnosis Can Help

Hypnosis offers a powerful solution to managing and overcoming fears and anxiety by addressing both the physiological and psychological aspects of these conditions.

Here’s how it can help:

  • Creating Calm and Safety: Hypnosis can help bring you out of the chronic fight-or-flight state by inducing deep relaxation and a sense of safety. Through guided imagery and positive suggestions, you can learn to create and anchor these calming emotions, which you can then access in stressful situations.

  • Systematic Desensitization: This technique gradually reduces the fear associated with specific triggers. By repeatedly visualizing the feared situation in a relaxed state, you can desensitize your response, allowing you to remain calm in instances where you were previously anxious.

  • Dream Therapy: Hypnosis can facilitate venting dreams, where your subconscious processes and releases the fear or phobia. This natural form of emotional release helps diminish the intensity of the fear.

  • Circle Therapy: This rapid and powerful venting process involves reconnecting with the initial fear event in a hypnotic state, allowing you to confront and let go of the fear. This deep therapeutic technique can provide significant relief from chronic anxiety.
